Review by Kiki:
The day started with the bright sun shining on our heads through the tents that made us yearn for an immediate shower, which revitalised us right away. On this day we took some interviews from some locals in order to grasp their point of view and spent time with the other media people. More particularly, we met Vojislav, a 32-year old computer specialist, who visits the festival since its very first years of existence who was staying at the camping site too. He confessed: “I grew up with Exit, Exit was our revolution, because as I have been living here for a long time, suppression was very intense in the country about 10 years ago, and we had a lot of problems, political ones and so on. So the young people woke up and formed Exit and that was our shelter”. He adds that what he most likes about the festival is “ the restless energy, everyone is so happy and excited and the atmosphere is very uplifting”. He would describe Exit in these three words: “Energy, Spirit, Great Views!”
After the mingling with the people of the camping, it started to get eventually dark and so we quickly got ready and set our way to the Petrovaradin Fotress, where hundreds of bodies were rushing to the Main Stage to get entertained by the renowned and explosive Prodigy! This year’s Exit festival was being taken over by The Prodigy and their traveling Warriors Dance spectacle. Their act was inaugurated by the energy-packed duo called South Central, who was spotted by Liam Howlett, Keith Flint and Maxim Reality in Paris and has since then toured with them.
It is the third time that The Prodigy played and ruled at Exit and it is an undoubted fact that they are the most beloved act aside from the most full force and vigorous performance that one has ever seen! The historic Petrovaradin fortress was decorated as a Warriors Dance battlefield with art installations and hundreds of flags challenging the audience to join and enjoy themselves during this mind-blowing event. Warriors Dance depicts “a surge of exciting vibes ranging from The Prodigy’s iconic anthems to seismic sub-low dubstep, live drum&bass and mighty guitar riffs all combining into a unique festival experience.”
With about 20 minutes delay, the Prodigy made a spectacular appearance on stage and greeted the immense sea of people with “Voodoo People”. Right after that there was a chaotic atmosphere in the front of the stage, since many people got out control jumping over each other and spilling beer around them, while others made an attempt to escape the front crowd. An hour had to pass until the crowd was in harmony. “EXIT, we can’t see you!” screamed the band on the Main stage, and from that moment and on chaos and madness possessed for one more time the masses. The guys invited the people to do the “warrior dance” with their hits.
The unforgettable Prodigy performed many of their most significant hits (Voodoo people, Breathe, Omen, Poison, Smack my bitch up etc) combined with new songs from the forthcoming album they are working on, titled “How to Steal a Jet Fighter”. During their performance, the Main Stage attendance record was broken, with over 35.000 people, many of whom danced in a high-powered way. The band was in excellent shape and that caused a growth of the crowd’s pulse to an extraordinary extent. More specifically as the Serbian website Mondo remarked: “The Prodigy tore-up the Main Stage” and we totally agree with that observation. The english 3-piece from their side stated that: ”EXIT has a crazy wild side that only very few festivals have. We fukin’ luv it. Come on!!!” while Liam Howlett announced that it is “One of the best festivals in the world. For real”.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see the whole set as we had to catch up with the Irish minimal techno Dj and Minus affiliate Matador. He was playing at 4am on the dance arena that was surrounded by the dynamic and heavy techno atmosphere (after Detroit hero Jeff Mills sets and before German duo Pan Pot, who seduced the audience with their intense and futuristic techno), Matador’s career trajectory has altered a lot since being signed to Richie Hawtin’s Minus imprint.
Right before that in the Main Arena we enjoyed the dancing rhythms of Feed Me, who expressed his opinion about his experience: “Probably the most unique festival on the continent and a great crowd, my only regret is that I couldn’t stay for the whole thing.” On the other hand the talented Pan Pot regretted that they didn’t play for more. They further explained : “Exit Festival was as amazing as we expected it to be. Great crowd, amazing venue… just 1.5 hours set-time is not enough though!”
