Review by Yuri Galitsky:
6 years have passed since the last visit of The Prodigy to Belarus. In the far 2009 they rocked on the stadium ‘Dinamo’ in Minsk within Ultra Music Festival, and now the cult electro musicians came back to our country and organized a sheer musical insanity in Minsk-Arena!
As it happens quite often, there was a warming up band called Pudra [Powder]. The guys played their music for about an hour trying to rock and prepare people for the wild rave. The material of Pudra wasn’t appreciated by everyone, but still the most of people were dancing to their music instead of standing still with a sick face and waiting for the heroes of the day. Finally the guys finished their program and after a while The Prodigy appeared on stage and with the track ‘Breathe’ breathed life into Minsk-Arena! People went wild (in the finest sense, of course) from the first notes. There weren’t any indifferent people left on the dance floor or seats who just listened to the music showing no distinct emotions. People were thrilled: in the ecstasy of joy someone started tearing the clothes off and turned into a wild and uncontrolled beast; someone just stood and screamed at the top of one’s lungs letting emotions out; someone shot selfies withing an outstanding event. But no one was indifferent!
After ‘Breath’ guys played their hit ‘Nasty’ from the album released last year ‘The Day Is My Enemy’. By the way after the years of silence ‘Nasty’ was the first single in support of the new CD and the band shot a video with the mystical fox on it. Further there was the time proven hit of the cult Brits ‘Firestarter’. Keith Flint and Maxim Reality most likely wanted to set the Arena on fire, because the atmosphere in the hall was hard to describe! The crowd of many thousands of The Prodigy’s fans seemed to turn into one big organism that kept on moving in musical trance! ‘Voodoo People’ stirred people up even more, no need to say about the effect of the eternal hit ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ that literally forced Arena on one’s knees. The whole insanity was going on for an hour and a half, while during the final track ‘Take Me To The Hospital’ Belarusian fans fired up the dance floor with an impressive flash-mob with flares. I dare to presume: Max Korz [Макс Корж] and Alexander Solodukha [Александр Солодуха] even when combine their efforts, would never be able to rock the audience as hard as The Prodigy did!
The work of musicians deserves a special attention, because except for electronic samples there were live guitar and drum players. Rob Holliday that played with the famous Marilyn Manson as well, had a very harmonious look with the dropped guitar and 100 % gave all he has got. The drummer Leo Crabtree is a real professional and perfectly supplemented the whole musical insanity taking place. Keith Flint rushed like one wound up on stage in bright red pants and switched the roles with Maxim Reality from time to time. By the way Keith and Maxim’s work is well co-ordinated and they are suited to each other. And of course the multi-instrumentalist Liam Howlett that created the unique sound of The Prodigy mixing different musical styles. Liam is the only member of ‘holy trinity’ that has the minimal musical education.
Great set-list, sound, inimitable musical atmosphere, well co-ordinated work of musicians and the whole band’s staff, all this is The Prodigy! I’m the one raised on their music and I’d like to wish the band to go on gladden us with their music and sincerely hope that guys will visit Minsk more often than once in 6 years.
