Review by Leisen Standen, www.blankgc.com.au:
English pioneers of the underground rave scene and ‘big beat’ genre, The Prodigy, burst onto the Brisbane live music scene on Monday night, performing an unforgettable set at The Riverstage. Proving to be the perfect venue, ravers and fans alike flocked to the outdoor arena ready for a night of big beats and high energy.
Setting the tone was Perth born DJ Enschway with his insane remix’s of Pendulum, Alice DJ and crowd favourite, Bomfunk MC’s ‘Freestyler’. Listening to Enschway’s drops, you couldn’t help but move your feet in anticipation for the main event.
As Enschway’s set came to a close, he addressed the crowd saying it was an honor to support The Prodigy as they had been an inspiration to him entering the realm of electronic music.
As smoke filled the stage, one by one The Prodigy appeared. The crowd erupted as frontman Keith Flint marched in wearing white with his signature punk hair-do, followed by Maxim in a larger than life fluffy black jacket. Opening their set with hit single ‘Breathe’, goosebumps and adrenaline collided as the crowd went wild. This was going to be a good night.
With a perfect set list of old and new tracks, duo Keith and Maxim uplifted the crowd with their chemistry and high energy stage presence. The crowd was electrified as a consequence, and you couldn’t help but feel good vibes as The Prodigy played highlights ‘Omen’, ‘Firestarter’ and their latest single ‘Light Up The Sky’.
Ending their set with ‘Take Me To The Hospital’ from their fifth studio album ‘Invaders Must Die’, the crowd wanted more as they chanted “encore.” It was then that the skies opened up and refreshingly rained down on our sweaty souls, that The Prodigy returned to the stage and officially closed out their set with controversial track ‘Smack My Bitch up’. You couldn’t have wished for a more perfect ending, and with a reputation as one of the most successful electronic acts of all time, you can see why.
